Janah & The Gypsies

Two guitars, one voice, and a tempo that takes over the room within two songs. Janah & The Gypsies is the band Janah Louard plays rumba, flamenco and Spanish classics with, together with guitarists Popy Basily and Jonay Guillermo.

What kind of band this is

Janah & The Gypsies play rumba, flamenco and gypsy, the sound many people know from the Gipsy Kings. Two guitars set the rhythm, one voice goes over the top, and the room starts clapping along without being asked. It is not a tribute band. It is Janah's own band, with songs of their own such as In jouw ogen, their own take on the André Hazes classic Amor Amor Amor, next to Spanish classics and well-known sing-alongs.

With The Gypsies, Janah sings in Spanish, Dutch and English. A Dutch song on a rumba rhythm works better than you might expect: In jouw ogen is the proof.

The musicians

Popy Basily, lead guitar

Guitarist Popy Basily with his guitar

Popy comes from a Sinti family where music has been made for generations. He picked up the guitar at eleven. He is the lead guitarist of the Basily Gipsy Band, which plays gypsy jazz in the tradition of the Hot Club de France, mixed with Balkan, blues and flamenco.

Jonay Guillermo, guitar

Jonay was born in Spain and played among the grown-ups as a small child, with his father leading the way. He lived in Spain for years and played there with the gitanos. His repertoire: swinging Spanish songs for young and old.

Where The Gypsies work best

  • Weddings. Especially for the party, when the dance floor needs to fill. And at weddings with a Spanish-speaking family.
  • Company parties and festivals. Live guitars stand out, also in a big room or outdoors.
  • Dinner shows with a Spanish or Mediterranean menu.
  • Theatre, for a whole evening of rumba and flamenco.

Solo or with The Gypsies?

Solo, Janah sings on his own to backing tracks. That fits anywhere and takes little space. With The Gypsies there are live musicians next to him: more warmth, more rhythm and more party, but you also need more room. Not sure? Describe your evening and the venue, and you'll get advice. More about Janah himself is on the English home page, and about Spanish evenings on Spanish-language singer.

What is needed

A performance with The Gypsies needs more space than a solo set, and power near the stage. Sound is agreed per venue: can the venue's system be used, or do they bring their own? That is settled beforehand, along with the time for setting up and a sound check.

What it costs

The price for Janah & The Gypsies is on request, because it depends on the length, the venue and the travel. For comparison: a 30-minute solo set by Janah starts from € 1,495 excl. VAT and Buma (Dutch music rights).
